The text below is for Friday night kiddush at home:

Baruch atah Adonai, m’kadeish haShabbat.

And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
The heaven and the earth were finished, and all their array. On the seventh day God finished the work that God had done.  God ceased on the seventh day from all the work that God had done. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it God ceased from all the work of creation that God had done.

Blessed are You, God of the world, Sovereign of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

Cover your eyes with your right hand and say:

Sh’ma Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad

Hear this Israel, Adonai is our God, Adonai is One

Recite the following verse in an undertone:

Baruch shem kevod malchuto l’olam va-ed

Blessed is the name of God’s glorious kingdom for ever & ever

Uk’shartam l’ot al yadecha v’hayu l’totafot bein einecha
Uch ‘tavtam al m’zuzot beitecha, uvisharecha

Love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.
And these words which I command you today should be taken to your heart.
Teach them thoroughly to your children, and speak about them when you’re sitting at home and when you walk in the street, and when you lie down to sleep and when you wake up.
Bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they’ll be a reminder between your eyes.
Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Commentary

The Talmud (Berachot 13b) tells us that we should lengthen the word ‘echad (one)’ in the phrase ‘Adonai echad (God is one)’ at the beginning of the Shema. Why is it important to extend that sound?

Because in declaring that God is one, is singular, unified without division, we want to extend that concept to each person, to all of Israel, to all humanity and the entire universe.

There is a oneness to reality, a unity beneath all opposites and differences. The atoms that we are all made of are no different to the ones that make up planets, elephants or skyscrapers.

When you really know that, it must change the way you act in the world.

Put these words in your heart, think of them all the time. Close your eyes and listen. Can you hear it?

The Haftarah is a reading from the Nevi-im, or Prophets, which comes after the Torah reading. Every week has a reading, but unlike the Torah reading, they don’t go in order. Instead, they jump around, with each reading chosen because it’s related somehow to that week’s Torah reading. See if you can work out the link!

Just like when reading Torah, the person reading the Haftarah says blessings before and after they read the Haftarah.
