Introduction

During Torah reading, Kriyat HaTorah, we read from the Torah, a specific portion of the five Books of Moses for that week. It’s possibly the high point of the entire prayer service. We celebrate the Torah and literally parade it around shul. This pride is understandable; it is one of the things which differentiates us and marks us out as Jews. Indeed, in the blessing, bracha, that someone who is called up to the Torah says, ‘we declare our thanks for being chosen from all the nations to receive the Torah.’ It is the printed book which has sold the most copies, and kept Jewish culture and life alive during 2,000 years of exile.
