What does the European Academy for Jewish Liturgy (EAJL) do?
EAJL provides competent and committed lay individuals with dedicated professional coaching and mentoring in leadership of Jewish prayer. EAJL is a pluralist ‘Academy without Walls’ teaching students across the different Jewish traditions, denominations and geographical divides.
Our one-to-one mentoring programme links students to teachers/mentors wherever in the world they may be, either in person or by the use of technology, such as Zoom. The teaching is offered on a student-led basis, where students can come to EAJL to learn a specific part of the service or how to lead a life cycle event as required. The learning is at the student’s pace, with a teacher that matches their tradition and learning style.
For those who are more experienced sh’lichei tsibbur, we also offer our Ba’al T’filla (Master of Prayer) Diploma Programme. This programme covers the teaching of every service of the year together with all the Biblical cantillation systems and liturgy for life cycle events.
All our programmes match students with high calibre teachers drawn from our network of Chazanim and Ba’alim T’filla from across the world. As well as one-to-one mentoring programmes we offer we offer small group online courses, a biennial T’filla Leaders Retreat, biennial teaching at the summer programme of the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem and other training initiatives bespoke to the needs of communities.
Why do I need to learn with a teacher if I can just get the music on the Internet?
‘How does it go’ is only a small part of what you need to lead a community in prayer and can be misleading. Leadership is about people, and our teaching is far more than just the chants and melodies involved. It is about relationship with our people and our tradition as well as discovering yourself and your own relationship with the Divine. It is about learning how to create a ‘kehilla kedosha’– a community where people feel engaged and held by the prayer and prayer leaders. Learning with an EAJL mentor is personal guidance and teaching from a professional chazan. You cannot learn that from an MP3 recording!
